Area man struggles to keep up with energetic theater conversation

By: Diana Mendoza

CHARLOTTE, NC- On a first date at a local café on Sunday evening, Jared Swanson, 26, struggled to keep up with an enthusiastic conversation about theater with his date.

According to eyewitnesses, she just started listing every milestone in her life that led her to acting, then describing, in detail, every single live show she had ever seen. She then reportedly told Swanson to take out a pen to write them all down so he could see them later.
“She was just so into it”, Swanson later said in an interview, “I had no clue what she was talking about”.

Indeed, fellow café goers reported overhearing excited relays of shows such as “Wicked” and “Universal Theater” (proclaiming that you haven’t lived until you’ve seen it) while Swanson vehemently nodded his head and laughed in all the right places.

“I almost thought that she was going to catch on when she asked me what some of my favorite shows were”, Swanson confessed, “but luckily I distracted her with a follow up question about her favorite movies”. Upon doing so, the theater lover reportedly dived into a fresh conversation about her love for romantic comedies and happy endings, peppering in comments such as “I can’t believe you haven’t seen that one!” and “you’ve got to watch it”.

After the date, Swanson reportedly googled “top theater shows” in his car in the café parking lot, but after 5 minutes of distracted tapping turned off his phone and went home to watch Netflix.

Local group seeks to stop hunger in hometown

Recently, Buzzfeed published a piece about a 26 year old woman who took a very expensive cab ride from a Halloween party and could no longer pay her rent. She started a GoFundMe online fundraiser and received almost double what she asked for. (read the full article here)

There has been a lot of outrage from commentators because of the trivial nature of the fundraiser in comparison to much more cause-worthy fundraisers/situations that people can donate to.

One visitor noted:

Birthdays are always a good time to celebrate but if someone is that deep in the hole and blacks out remembering spending that money in the first place, I dont know why I’d feel the need to donate. So I understand why she’s upset but if you’re already having trouble paying rent, drinking to the point of not remembering on your birthday/rent day, doesn’t seem like the best idea.

Whether we agree or not on her cause being fundraiser-worthy, we can all agree that there are other causes out there that deserve as much recognition if not more.

Here is a fundraiser being done by a group of students to fight hunger in their community. They will use the funds to prepare home cooked meals and boxes of necessities to needy families.

Giving a little won’t break the bank, but it will make a world of difference in another person’s life.

Rape Culture

This is my experience, my life.

As a girl growing up in a patriarchal society, you learn a lot of things. Namely, that you have to always be on guard because the world is not safe for you. As a kid my parents never let me go out with friends or have sleep overs at their houses because they thought there was the possibility of their fathers, brothers, or relatives being there and “doing something to me”. Code for: they thought I would get raped. I remember overhearing my dad tell my mom about a horrific dream he had in which I (his only daughter) got brutally raped, his worst fear had manifested itself into a dream. I would cry and protest this because I still hadn’t absorbed The Fear. It was a much more innocent time for me. Continue reading

Fuck the Patriarchy

You know what I hate? Double fucking standards.  I’ll give you a prime example. I was in the quiet zone in the library a few weeks ago when a good friend of mine called me. I took a few minutes to chat with him in my best inside voice, trying to be as respectful as I could. Within fifteen minutes a puffy faced white boy came up to me and said in an angry hiss “hey could you be quiet. I’m trying to study and this is the quiet zone of the library. You need to leave if you can’t follow the rules!” Embarrassed and angry, I told my friend that I would talk to him later and resumed my quiet study. I was upset, but what could I do? I was in the quiet zone and I guess I had to admit he was right…

Now, I am in the library again. Same floor, same quiet zone. With the same guy sitting right behind me. The only difference is, I’m not the one being disruptive this time. Two black guys on the other row are being loud as fuck and talking about Kim Kardashian’s ass for the past half hour. But has anyone said anything about it? Nope. The guy behind me is quiet as a mouse. Continue reading

Feminism and The Big Bang Theory

big-bang-theory_lThere is a saying that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and this is fitting to describe Feminism because they work to make the weakest links strong so that the whole movement can be strong. Continue reading

Awkward Parent

I went to the grocery store today with my 7 month old son. As I am standing at the scanner scrutinizing every item that is scanned, I suddenly hear shrieks of delight and realize that my son has attracted the attention of a couple of teenagers. I watch quietly as they make funny faces and my son laughs hysterically. I don’t really know what to do, I smile awkwardly and turn back to watch the scanner. I pay for the items and hesitate, I don’t want to be the one to break up the fun but it is time to go. I start pulling the cart and give the kids an apologetic smile. “Say bye, Eric!” I say and they are visibly sad to see him go. We start walking away and one of the boys follows, still making funny faces while my son laughs.

Where did this social butterfly come from?

Hot cars and Sexual assault

So apparently sexual assault and kids dying in hot cars is all over the media these days and I just have to wonder at the world that we live in. Are we really that fucked in the head that we can’t remember to take our kid out of the car? Doesn’t this say something about how busy everyone is nowadays? Is work really that fucking important? I know that nobody is perfect, I feel for those parents who lost the children. They don’t need to be chastised more than they already are, but at the same time a dialogue should be started about the fact that nobody has time to live anymore. To breathe. To take a minute to enjoy the day. More and more people are putting themselves on autopilot and these are the disastrous results. Continue reading

6 Things that only Single Parents will Understand

It’s not easy being a single parent. This is something I have always heard and known to be true. But I didn’t realize just how hard it was until I actually became one. Here’s a list single parents will be able to relate to.

Unconditional Love

I have never learned so much about the world and about myself in such a short amount of time as I have since I’ve had my son. The last four months have been a whirlwind. My life has been turned upside down and inside out with all of the best features showing. My sense of time has been altered. I went from counting time in minutes and hours to now seeing it in increments of bottles, wet diapers, and monthly milestones. It may sound cliche, but I never could have imagined a deeper love. Honestly. I recently saw this great TedTalks video on the subject and just had to share. Enjoy.

A New Addition to My Little Family

IMAG0447Meet Diego. At just two months old this little guy has stolen my heart. Not only is he an incredibly calm and affectionate puppy, but he also seems to love my pregnant belly. He loves to snuggle in my lap and gently places his head by my baby- it’s literally the cutest thing on the planet. Continue reading
